Today, on International Women’s Day, the Thanet Female Veterans Group was officially launched in partnership with the East Kent Mind Veterans Project. Led by Karen Brinkman, the EKM Armed Forces connector, this initiative aims to support and empower female veterans in the region.

The launch event, held at The Veterans Association in Birchington, saw the participation of 14 women, including ex-military personnel, spouses and supporters. Refreshments were generously provided by the venue, fostering a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Mel Cooper, the DWP Armed Forces Champion, joined the occasion and engaged with attendees, answering questions and selecting the winner of the monthly veterans survey draw. Congratulations to Kevin Harding, the recipient of this month’s £25 M&S voucher.

Karen Brinkman expressed her joy at the event’s success, highlighting its importance in connecting women with essential support networks. Many attendees, new to support groups, found comfort and camaraderie in the inclusive environment.

Looking forward, Karen is excited to organise future gatherings on different days and locations to cater to different needs. She hopes to extend the initiative to the Canterbury area, fostering a sense of community among female veterans.

The launch of the Thanet Female Veterans Group reflects a commitment to honouring and uplifting the contributions of women in the armed forces. As we celebrate International Women’s Day, let’s continue championing initiatives that empower female veterans.
