Students from the University of Kent Psychology Society on Running for “Mental Elf” 2024

This November, a group of passionate psychology students from the University of Kent are stepping out to raise awareness and funds for East Kent Mind, the mental health charity.

The students, including Elize (pictured, left), Luwam (middle), and Fatah (right) have shared their excitement for joining the cause.A picture of students at the University of Kent wearing their Mental Elf hats

Elize noted: “This is such an important cause and I haven’t run in a very long time, so why not do it for charity!”

The event, which blends fitness, fun, and fundraising, resonates deeply with the students. They hope their efforts will spotlight the importance of mental health support and resources, especially for young people and students who often juggle multiple pressures.

Why the “Mental Elf” Run?

The run will start from the Umbrella Centre in Canterbury, and will see everyone dressed in elf costumes as they tackle the 5K course. The festive twist adds an element of joy and community to the meaningful endeavour.

Luwam added: “I’m a big advocate for mental health, and rallying up the troops as psychology society members to support mental health awareness!”

When asked about why the students wanted to take part this year, Fatah enthusiastically replied, ““Why not run? It’s for a good cause, it’s only 5K, you will see me sprinting!”

However, when pressed on whether he knew how long a 5K actually was, he candidly admitted, “God no.”

For the University of Kent students, this opportunity is not just about fundraising but also fostering a sense of community and breaking the stigma surrounding mental health.
